Summer Scholars Diversity Scholarship

The Summer Scholars Diversity Scholarship focuses on broadening the number of traditionally under-represented students preparing for an undergraduate education. This scholarship provides need-based financial support and recognizes the academic and leadership accomplishments of high school sophomores and juniors, while providing a college experience where students explore academic interests and develop time management and interpersonal skills critical to their success in college.

Eligibility
Students who receive at least one of the following benefits will be eligible for the diversity scholarship:

  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Reduced School Lunch
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Women Infants and Children (WIC)

 In addition, to participate in the Summer Scholars Diversity Scholarship selection process, you must:

  • Be a high school sophomore or junior at the time of application
  • Possess a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Have taken the PSAT, SAT or ACT
  • Demonstrate high financial need, as determined through the CSS Financial Aid PROFILE
  • Plan to apply for and enroll in a full-time undergraduate program commencing in fall 2019 (if you are a junior) or 2020 (if you are a sophomore)

 Scholarship Award

A limited number of scholarships are available. Scholarship funding is provided by the University of Miami.
The scholarship award covers the Summer Scholars Residential Program Fee ($7,927) including:

  • Instruction – Tuition, lab fees, class trips, textbooks/printed materials
  • Room – Double occupancy room
  • Meal Plan – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (daily)
  • Student Services
  • Student Health Center (doctor’s visits)
  • Wellness Center (fitness and intramural facility)
  • UM Identification Card (‘Cane ID)
  • Student Activities: planned programs and excursions, including transportation for off-campus events

Please note: scholarship recipients are required to provide their own transportation to and from Miami. Residential status is required to receive the award. Housing opens on Saturday, July 7 and closes on Friday, July 27. A complimentary airport shuttle is available for students flying to and from Miami International Airport (MIA) during specified hours. Scholarship recipients are required to be covered by an adequate health insurance plan. In addition, students must provide funds for personal expenses during the program, i.e. food not included in the meal plan (snacks and evening food delivery), souvenirs, toiletries and other personal needs.

  2. Request Application Fee Waiver
    1. If you meet the eligibility requirements (section 1) to apply for the Diversity Scholarship, you may also apply for an application fee reduction waiver which will reduce the application fee to $25 (from $75).
    2. Please note the waiver must be entered when submitting the Summer Scholars Program application. We are unable to refund application fees once submitted.
    3. Application waivers will be sent via email, once your eligiblity has been determined.

  3. Submit the Summer Scholars Program Application
    1. Before you apply for the Diversity Scholarship, you are required to submit the Summer Scholars Program Application online.
    2. On the application you will have the opportunity to input your first and second choice for academic specialty.  Keep in mind a limited number of scholarships are available per academic specialty. Therefore if you have applied for the Diversity Scholarship we would not be able to confirm your program of acceptance until scholarship decisions have been announced.

  4. Complete the Diversity Scholarship Application
    1. Upload your essay with your online application, responding to the following writing prompt: 
      How has your family background affected the way you see the world? (up to 300 words)
    2. Upload your PSAT, SAT or ACT score report with your application. Unofficial score reports are accepted at time of application. Please note that an official score report could be requested for scholarship awards.

  5. Complete the CSS Financial Aid Profile Form
    1. The form is to be completed by you and your parent or guardian. If your custodial parent is remarried, the information should include his/her spouse. Please note there is a $25 nonrefundable application fee.

  6. Application Deadline: March 1
    1. Both the Summer Scholars Program Application and the Diversity Scholarship Application must be submitted by the scholarship deadline – March 1 – to be considered.
